“Our vacuums really suck!”

This was the sign on the outside of the vacuum shop and I had to laugh as I walked past. Vacuum cleaners are wonderful inventions; they achieve their job by sucking the dirt and debris of the week, out of the carpet, conveniently depositing it into a bag for you to deal with later. This is fine in theory, except for one thing… no-one likes to empty the bag!

Every now and then someone says to me “Life Sucks!” and in some ways it does. Part of life involves ‘sucking’ up the debris and difficulties which come our way: challenges at work; challenges in our family; unmet desires or; unfulfilled dreams. The longer you live the more you have ‘sucked up’ and the fuller the bag has become.

My vacuum stops working when the bag starts getting full. It gets ‘choked up’ and cannot do its job. Similarly, my life gets ‘choked up’ and ceases to function unless I find an effective way of clearing out all of the accumulated dust and junk.

One way is to have someone you can talk to; a friend who doesn’t mind the sometimes dusty task. But by far the best option that I have found is having a personal and intimate relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

So when the dust bag of your life is full, why don’t you ask Jesus for some help?

“Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
