It was a moment I will never forget, the aroma filled the small caravan we had just moved into and the rest of the week would never be the same.
My best friend’s mum was a wonderful Italian ‘momma’ who was convinced that her son would die if he didn’t have spaghetti at least twice a week. So she had lovingly prepared a Tupperware container of her best bolognaise, two packets of spaghetti, and she had also included a tin of parmesan cheese.
The aroma that assaulted our olfactory sense was not the thick rich smell of tomatoes but the pungent stench of parmesan which had opened in transit and infiltrated all of my friend’s clothes. For the next 5 days, everywhere we went, everywhere we turned…there it was. The not so faint smell of what many people call “vomit cheese”.
Some things impact our lives in limited ways. They are like the proverbial ‘water off of a duck’s back’ but some things have a way of being absorbed and leaving their mark or their fragrance upon us. Some of these things are good but some of them leave us smelling like parmesan.
The Bible says that sin infiltrates everything we are and everything we do. Every one of us falls short of getting things right, we may try hard but we still fail. Our sin against God and those around us permeates everything we are and there is only one who can remove the smell.
