I have just finished the planning for my family Christmas holiday.
This is a first for me… usually it is not until a couple of days before the silly season that I do anything about that fact that the that holidays are coming up and that we really need to go somewhere and do something. But I was determined that this year would be different!
The reason… I took a leaf out of the book of one of my best friends who told me how they plan their next holiday during their current one so that when they come back to work they have something to look forward to.
It is not that we hate our jobs, far from it, but knowing that you have a break coming up, relaxation and adventure (whatever mix you like), helps you face all those day-to-day things which can be a real challenge for each of us. Knowing the value of what is coming up helps you face tomorrow, knowing that you are working towards a goal.
Jesus had the same attitude but He wasn’t just planning His Christmas holidays. He knew the joy and fulfilment that waited for Him and for all who would follow Him in the future. But He also knew that He had some challenging work to do before it would become a reality. He faced the disgusting humiliation of the cross, an agonising death, the mockery of people He loved and the cold shadow of a stone tomb because of what was yet to come!
So whatever you are looking forward to, make sure you are looking in His direction! “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross” Hebrews 12:2
